Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 15 junior high students with disabilities ranging from learning disabilities and mental retardation to emotional disturbance and ADD/ADHD. My students live in a high need and violent neighborhood in the Bay Area.

My students' curriculum is stored in the cardboard boxes it came in and needless to say they don't hold up with daily wear and tear. I've tried to get my class to use the lockers outside of our classroom for two main reasons: to be social with the general ed students and to keep them from stashing their falling apart boxes around the room.

We need a sturdy and secure storage bin in class to hold all of their materials, sostudents could access their supplies in ease. The disabilities my students have make the ancient lockers in the hallway nearly impossible to use because they either can't remember their combination or remember the way to turn the knob. Even after two and three years of having the same combination, some students still can't open their locker.

With your help, my students won't have to fight with their lockers anymore and will have a secure place to store their reading and math books and pencil boxes. I know this will make them so happy because getting their things will be stress free!
