Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are a very diverse rural high school which has been historically set far back by violent losses in the past and is now reviving and healing in powerful ways.

I teach four sophomore English course, one of which is intentionally all-boys. I'm performing a study to see how their grades, test scores and attendance will compare with my three other co-ed classes. Also, I wish to see what happens if the ELA curriculum and activities are geared towards the interests and strengths generally embodied by young men.

Rather than the district-adopted non-fiction units in our anthology, I prefer to teach novels, particularly newer ones. My young men have been very engaged so far in my English class by the choices of our readings, writings, and community-building activities, all of which are centered on a conscious rite of passage. To read rite of passage account gone-wrong of a contemporary young man rebelling against his suburban trap would not only satisfy my required non-fiction genre unit mandated by the district, but capture my young men who are often hard-sells.

Fredrick Douglass said, "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men." This world needs emotionally- intelligent young men who know clearly know and accept themselves. Your support of a class set of "Into the Wild" will continue a vision fusing English Language Arts with a greater emotional intelligence needed in the young men of this generation to become whole and confident human beings.
