My fourth grade students love to learn. I teach high-poverty students in an extremely low-income area. The school they attend encourages community involvement, and there are many individuals from our community involved at our school.

My students have begun to show interest in recycling. They are cleaning out their desks and book bags, as well as finding things at home to bring in and recycle! This has also begun to catch on in our whole school. Recycling is a very important part of our job as citizens, but we have no place to put our recyclables in the classrooms. There are only about 3 bins school-wide in which to place these items.

My classroom, and the rest of our school, needs a place to store items until the recycle truck comes to pick them up. We can learn about it each day, but without the supplies to practice the act, it does not really hit home. These bins will serve as an amazing learning tool by teaching every student in our school about recycling! The book series on recycling will also help students in every grade learn more about what it means to recycle and help the environment.

With your help, my students will be learning the importance of recycling. It is our hope as a class to inspire the whole school to begin recycling! Think of all the students this will inspire and the amount of good it will do for our community and the environment. You may even start a trend in these students that may continue into their homes. The amount of effect this project can have is really infinite!
