Voice of the Reformation

My students need books on scholastic journalism, a crash course in appropriate grammar and word choice, pens to design unique and scan-able art, and official-looking notepads to fill with reporters' scribbled quotes.

If I didn't fight for reform in my classroom, school and district, I couldn't return a single smile in this hallway. It's difficult enough greeting the expectation and hope gleaming in my students' eager eyes, knowing for the most part, I move molehills rather than mountains. Important, but still, molehills. My students attend a forgotten district--abandoned to a declining population of minority and impoverished students. Administration upheavals are the norm, with no clear direction or rationale passed along to the front lines. My students and I cope with the same inequities that plague a web of forgotten schools around the nation: lack of media, supplies, let alone a comprehensive content or skills curriculum. Frankly, my school is the last best hope of this district. Without regard to academic performance, it draws students from each sub-district with the promise of high expectations, college rigor, free dual credit, and internship opportunities in math and science. Entering our second year and doubling in grades (gradually building to a 6-12 middle and high school), it may be early to call the effort a success. Yet a relentless belief in our students drives our staff to take on the challenges of building a school. Our students need a voice--specifically, a scholastic school paper that tackles all sides of the inevitable issues of change. Despite the redeeming promise of high expectations at our early college, the student body suffers from a lack of true community spirit, perhaps for good reason. The extracurricular activities that we offer do not rival those of top public high schools let alone the collegiate environment. Changes in district policies, class schedules, tutoring structures, and other daily procedures seem arbitrary and punishing. A newspaper will provide a productive forum for students to voice questions and opinions concerning the rationale and impact of school decisions. With the resources in my project, students from across the current grade levels (sixth, seventh, ninth, and tenth) will learn to interview, write for a newspaper audience, and express new ideas in a respectful manner. I have asked for supplies that will encourage students to read, ask questions, write, draw, revise, edit, and understand the importance of good journalism. Your donation puts the tools of reform into student hands--where the future truly belongs.
