Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year I have the pleasure of teaching Modern Literature Honors. My students are a a mixture of highly motivated high school juniors and seniors with a range of abilities and interests. Our school is located in a high-need community, with a high number of low income families and some homeless families.

The obstacle facing us this year deals with curriculum materials. I have a lot of great things planned this year, but our class is mainly geared towards two overarching ideas or themes: coming of age and Utopian/dystopian society. The classic sci-if novel Ender's Game would be a welcome and appropriate addition to our classroom. Our focus this year is relating to and analyzing literature, in preparation for a college literature course. Ender's Game is a very though provoking and stimulating text, posing such questions as "Who decides our identity? Who decides our fate? What are the negative effects of military training on the mind and on the world?" This novel will bring to light issues that my students face with peer pressure and negotiating thresholds; providing hours of pertinent discussion and a wealth of material and concepts to use in activities, papers, and projects.

Due to the financial state we're dealing with right now, we are not allowed to require students to purchase books, and there is no more money to purchase novels in our budget. Unless someone donates copies of Ender's Game, we will have to do without. I believe that the fulfillment of this donation will improve our classroom discussion, complete our coming of age and Utopian/dystopian themes, and further prepare my students for a college climate that will require them to engage in and expand upon literature and literary concepts.

Your help will ensure that my students have access to the materials that will help bring our school year full circle and will bridge the connection between our first semester focus on the challenges of adolescence and our second semester focus on Utopian/dystopian communities. Your donation will bring possibility, challenging concepts, and unity to our room.
