Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In my fifth grade self contained classroom, I keep students busy "fishing for knowledge" by setting up and maintaining a freshwater aquarium. My class make-up includes students who are mildly autistic, hearing impaired, "at-risk", and gifted.

We were fortunate enough to have a full aquarium set-up donated to us several years ago. Unfortunately, several items have worn out or broken and need to be replaced in order to make the aquarium operational again this year.

I am requesting a new filter, thermometer, light strip, water testing materials, and fish to restart our aquarium. This will provide the students the materials they will need to proceed with their aquarium set-up and study project. The students will work in teams to research the requirements for a healthy aquarium environment by using the Internet and research books in the classroom.

Currently, science education in public schools is extremely underfunded. With your help, my students will be able to create a living habitat, which will provide ongoing science education throughout the year. As the year continues, students will take turns observing the fish, taking care of the fish, and monitoring water quality using a testing kit. This project ties into our 5th grade science curriculum , which emphasizes the importance of water,the water cycle, and environmental awareness. Your donation will enrich the science education of these students and of future students as well.
