Veritable Veggies and Functional Fruits: Life Skills Lessons

My gardening project needs8 Root Viewer Garden Stands, a big book and cassette of "Grandmother's Garden", with 2 additional Plant Growing kits.

Learning for life is living for life! I teach a Life-Skills program to 5th grade students with severe disabilities including autism, developmental delays, and brain injury. We are a Title 1 school (high poverty), and all of my students receive free breakfast/lunch. Despite the daily hardships my students face, they are eager to work on task oriented curriculum and celebrate each and every victory.

The goal of a life-skills curriculum is to help students learn to become as independent as possible to reach their maximum life potential. In addition to learning how to cook, my students need to learn about health and nutrition. Giving them the skill set to grow some of their own food will encourage healthy life-long eating habits as well as provide a strong sense of independence throughout their lives.

Unfortunately, there is no budget for me to purchase gardening items for my students. My students each need a Root-Vue gardening set in order to watch their plants grow and begin to understand basic structures of living things. In addition, I am requesting a storybook and tape to encourage language arts and ESL development. Finally, I have a requested a small curriculum that provides a variety of games and various learning activities to activate each of the different ways of learning, with a strong focus on hands-on sensory learning.

By providing help with this request, you are helping to ensure that my students can grow up to become independent, successful individuals who can make smart choices about eating and help our environment at the same time. In addition, your funds will allow my students to have a full curriculum/class experience that will be 100% successful for them and reduce much of the frustration we experience currently in class due to a lack of materials.
