Connecting Technology

My students need 32 flash drives (2GB) and a set of computer speakers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fifth grade at a school with a majority of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Additionally, a large portion of my students are ELL (English Language Learners). Despite these external hurdles, my students are hard-working, creative, and focused on school.

I believe that learning about and using technology is an integral part of their education. When they enter the real world, they will be expected to be proficient in basic computing skills. However, our school is one of the oldest schools in Las Vegas and lacks many modern technologies. For example, our computers are ancient. They are often broken, barely run, and--when are running--often crash. This is frustrating for our students because their creativity and hard work are often lost when a computer freezes.

If each student had a thumb drive to save his or her work on, we wouldn't have to worry about the individual computer saving the work. This would reduce student loss and create even more incentive to write vivid stories and create beautiful poems. In addition, the students would learn about basic computing through saving and caring for their own thumb drive. Each student being responsible for their own thumb drive would avoid the computer issues and give the students new ownership of their creative products. To combat the rather useless computers at school, I use my own laptop (and a projector donated by a generous donor just like you!) in our lessons. I create slideshows and show videos of important cultural and historical events. This is both engaging and educational. The problem is that the students often cannot hear the video because the speakers on my laptop do not go high enough for all 32 students to hear. If we had a set of speakers to connect to my laptop then every student could hear the video with ease. Additionally, the speakers could be used to play soft music while writing which encourages imaginative thoughts.

Your donation would allow my students to bypass the technological disaster of our school and move onto more creative thoughts. It would also allow EVERY child to hear class videos.
