I currently teach third grade and help students achieve their highest level of success. Third graders must deal with the pressure of passing 2 high stakes tests at the end of the year. A large portion of the reading test involves responding to and interpreting non-fiction texts.

"When is the last time you learned something new? I mean actual facts about topics that interest you, not just something related to work. Well, in my classroom, my students are always motivated to learn something new. Currently in third grade, my students are faced with the daily stress of performing well in school. They need to pass two state tests in order to move on to fourth grade. If I remember correctly, when I was in third grade I enjoyed school and learning. Now, my students are constantly stressing over learning things geared towards the state tests and not for their own enjoyment.

I want to make a change in my classroom and give my students the ability and chance to learn about any topic that interests them, even if it doesn't relate to the "tests". My solution is to fill my classroom with non-fiction texts, books, and activities, so that everywhere my students look there will be opportunities to expand their knowledge on many different topics. The big books will allow me to teach my students how to read non-fiction books correctly and understand what they are reading. The group set of books will allow my students to interact with each other and talk about what they are learning. The activity sets, both for comprehension and writing reports, will help guide my students through the non-fiction genre. All of these materials will be essential for my students to learn something new and interesting.

You will make it possible for my students to better connect to the real world. They will be more prepared to read and understand texts about current events and other non-fiction topics.
