Science At Their Finger Tips

My students need a Can Do! Science Discovery Kit, a flower stamp set and pads, science specimens which include life cycles of a butterfly, and a set of file folder games.

I teach at a title one school which means it is low income. I have 17 kindergarteners in my classroom which 9 are girls and 8 are boys.

My students do not get the chance to explore science outside of the classroom. Throughout the year, I have done many science adventures with my students and they have loved them. My students have showed an interest in science and I want to have different activities for them to use but I can't afford to buy new materials for them. I have learned through my years of teaching that students will learn by doing and not by me telling them what to expect. As I said before my students do not have the chance to experience hands on activities anywhere else other than school. Most of my students will go home and watch TV. They don't have the chance to do science experiments like: if the rock will sink or float, or to find out what a feather feels like. By getting these materials not only will the students have the materials to learn on their own, but they will also increase their vocabulary as they are learning about new things. I do not have the materials for my students to do science experiments unlike the other classes at my building. They were all given a science kit and my class did not receive one.

According to a study done by Purdue University the students who learn by hands on experiences will perform academically higher than students who just listen to the teacher lecture. Science is important and affects our daily life and I want my students to be motivated to learn about it. One of the resources is a stamp that helps the students label the different parts of a plant. This is a important concept that the students need to know about the real world. Also, I asked for science experiments that the students can do on their own. Each science experiment has pictures showing the students how to perform the experiment. As I said before research has shown that students that do hands on experiments will have better test scores and will pay attention when it is time to learn. It will also increase my students' vocabulary.

You will help motivate my students in learning about science through hands on experiences. You will also help to ensure that my students will perform higher in academics.
