Predicting the Weather

My students need 3 anemometers, a weather station, barometer, and 3 weather vanes. They also need books about the weather and a dictionary of weather terminologies.

I teach 6th grade science at a small Title I school in one of the most diverse communities in our area. About 50% of our students are Hispanic, 25% Asian/Pacific Islander, 20% White and 5% Black. They represent more than 40 nationalities around the world and most of them are second generation immigrants. Most of them are English Language Learners and there are also some with Learning and Speech Disabilities.

One of the many challenges a teacher faces is the lack of supplies and materials in the classroom. Although there were kits provided for the different units I teach, I found out that they were not enough to meet the needs and the interest of my students. Besides, due to budget constraints, we were only provided a class set which we have to use for all our classes. I teach an amazing group of students who has a gazillion of questions in their minds. I want them to be able to explore and find answers to most of their questions by doing inquiry work and hands-on activities. As a teacher, I believe that it would be very frustrating for students if their questions are not answered. This will cause them to lose their interest and stop them from asking some more questions. When we were working on the weather unit, I let them make their own anemometer, wind vane, and barometer. We went out and measured wind speed and direction and tried to measure the air pressure using our improvised barometer. They were really excited to work on those projects but were disappointed because they cannot make accurate measurements using the tools they have made.

I encouraged them at the beginning of the school year to be accurate with their measurements and observations and I felt they were really frustrated when they cannot meet these expectations. By providing us with the weathers tools, books and dictionary, they will be able to make accurate measurements and use the right descriptive words to write their observations.

Your donations will really make a difference in the way my students will do their weather investigations. You will become a big part of the little successes they will make everyday as they uncover the answers to the many questions they have in their young minds.
