Dancing Through The Pages, With My Tap Shoes On

My students need a small collection of books about dance and dancers.

Grades 6-8

I teach dance to a very eager, talented and bright group of middle school students. My students live in a very poor community, this is my second year teaching at this school and I enjoy and look forward to teaching my students every day. Most of my students have special education needs besides living in poverty.

My students do not have enough money to buy books. I have fifteen books for two hundred students. My students love dance and everything about dance, they love the books that I have and I have been able to achieve so much with them through the art of dance.

I need, or it would be better to say, that I am dreaming of having a small library of dance books for my students. There are so many stories in dance and I have so many types of students, I would love to see my students look at the dance books and see something that they would want to read about. Dance is is art that can be private or shared and when my students pick a book it will be a time just for them and the story. This will help my students let their imaginations take them into the book and away from their environment, which can be very limiting. Having these books will also help my students become better readers, because they love dance, and having books about dance to read will ensure that they read more, and bring their reading levels up at the same time.

Your support for this project will make a great difference in my students' dance education and literacy exposure. Without these books my students will be limited to what I have and what I can find. To have a choice in dance books is a great gift to any dance program and my students will learn and grow so much from such a gift. I really believe that the exposure to the world that they will discover while dancing through the pages will help change some lives. Your help will ensure that my students will have this great opportunity.
