Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students need books that will enrich their first experience in school and help instill a love of literature. In Kindergarten, children have their first taste of formal schooling. Making it print rich helps to make it an enjoyable. In our community it is especially important. We are a high-need school, with 100% free breakfast and lunch. On top of that, we have a high percentage of second language learners.

Books are a vital part of school. It is where many people first heard well loved stories like "Caps for Sale", or "The Giving Tree". Schools do not provide those books. My classroom library has, for years, been primarily for second grade and up. Now that it is for Kindergarten, it is woefully inadequate.

Kindergarteners need books filled with beautiful pictures and captivating stories, and all within in few pages. Our class will be able to hear stories read to them daily, and be able to look over them again and again in their free time.

A library filled with Kindergarten books will ensure that my students hear classic stories, and see pictures to spark the imagination. It will make it possible to familiarize my students with print that they can understand, and even READ by the end of the year!
