Literacy. I choose to use this word to introduce my classroom because it is literacy that is the fundamental aspect of any elementary education. My twenty six five and six-year-old students come to school each morning with smiles and energy. I gladly greet them, but must take that energy and enthusiasm and channel it, so that at the end of the day, month and year, every action in my classroom is taken, so that these kindergarten students will leave reading and writing on grade level. If they do not get the foundation they need in kindergarten, they will be on pace to be behind grade level for the rest of their lives. If my students can not read on grade level, their work in math, social studies and science will become infinitely more challenging. It is imperative that my students leave with strong literacy skills.

In my community in Arkansas many of my students are living in high poverty. I have come to know some of the many challenges they face on a daily basis. In spite of the great odds that are stacked against them, it is my responsibility to partner with these students and their parents, so that we can get them on track for success. Not only do we need to get them on track for success, but we also need them to be exposed to and have experiences with things that their counterparts in affluent communities experience. One way that we can ensure they have these experiences is by using technology. In the past ten years or so, work places have seen a drastic increase in the amount of technology being used. This trend will undoubtedly continue. Therefore, my students will need to be as proficient with technology as their wealthier peers are, not merely just as familiar with the alphabet.

These students absolutely love when they get the opportunity to use the computer or view a movie that is projected onto the wall of their classroom. I want my students to have more opportunities like this to get excited about learning. During their literacy block, my students would benefit greatly from the opportunity to learn from applications on an iPod Touch. Our classroom only has three computers. With twenty six students, each student gets to use the computer once a week for fifteen minutes or so. If we had two iPod Touches, it would give us yet another opportunity to allow our students to become familiar with the alphabet, sight words, etc. via technology. By using iPod Touches, our students will be able to conveniently learn how to operate another type of technology and simultaneously increase their understanding of the English language.

You have the opportunity to impact my students in a tremendous way. You will be able to become a part of this kindergarten classroom in a unique way. You will be able to ensure that each student, regardless of where they grow up, is given an opportunity to succeed and given access to technology that their wealthier counterparts have access to (be it at home or at school).
