Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

What is Art? How do you know? Do you read about it or look it up online? What should children do when they cannot read about it for lack of resources?

Can you imagine the world without art? No? Well it is just as difficult for children to imagine what Cubism or Pop Art looks like without visual references. Recently, my projector died and I am now searching through old college textbooks trying to find examples of artists' work to show the students, but every picture I find is 2x2 inches or smaller. Our school does not have a library, teachers are encouraged to have their own classroom libraries. It is difficult to find books at reasonable prices, but art books are nearly impossible to find for cheap! My students keep asking me for more examples of the movement we are studying, but it is hard to keep their interest with tiny pictures.

With our own art library, students will be able to look at the books for reference. Students will be able to relate to artists and gain a better understanding of the movements. Grades 4-6 will be putting on their own pop art show in the winter, including everything from conception to completion. I am anxious for the students to understand the Pop Art movement and what the artists were trying to accomplish. The primary grades are working to create artwork that shows off their skills. I am confident that our classroom art library will give students a better relationship with the artists we are learning about and also give them the opportunity to experiment with cartooning/ drawing during any free time they may have.

While I have purchased many materials for the classroom, I cannot afford to start a library as well. Your help with our classroom art library will ensure that my students become well-acquainted with famous artists and movements instead of just memorizing facts. They will be given the opportunity to read about them during free time and explore what they are interested in, not just what we are learning about. We have begun recycling to pay for some of the books we would like to have, help them to realize that help from others makes a difference in the world too!
