My students need copies of the 33 selected memoirs to begin examination of the personal, literary and academic power in the study and creation of memoir.

“The Met now has the lowest dropout rate and the highest college placement rate of any high school in the state. These are the kind of results you can get when you design a high school to prepare every student for college.” Bill Gates, February 2005 National Governors’ Association Education Summit At our schools we believe that all of our students should have both the choice and the ability to engage in post-secondary learning. That means preparing our students for the rigors of a college and workplace environment that requires critical literacy, the tools for analysis and evaluation, and the practice of reading for perspective and understanding. One of the ways we accomplish this is to engage in rigorous, inquiry-based, literacy instruction. Using the reading and writing of memoir, we examine structure, style, and purpose of writing, expand vocabulary, practice text-based reading strategies of inquiry and analysis and explore how perspective shapes “truth”. It is also a graduation requirement that students complete a 75 page autobiography with extensive revision. As students examine the truths of others, they begin to identify and express their own truths, building confidence and experience and knowledge of self-as-reader and learner. The study of memoir is also a tool to engage students in expanding literacy by focusing on vocabulary building, grammar and structure, and composition and style. Our school serves one of the most diverse communities in the United States and has 54% enrollment in the free-and-reduced lunch program. Our students develop their own learning plans, implement rigorous projects, and engage in real-world internships.
