There is no better way to learn than by creating something from nothing. In the high school where I teach we are fighting gang violence, high drop-out rates, teen pregnancy, low-income households, and domestic violence. Our students are losing programs due to economic necessity and mishandling of school district funding. Specialty teachers are being fired or sent to other school locations. My students within the Specialized Services Department go unnoticed and ignored. They receive the basic course offerings, often in isolated classrooms. For the past two years I have been assigned to teach an introductory course to the physical sciences. Man, was I bored, and so were my students. So as a class community, we decided it was time for a change.

The classes consisted of no more than four to six students, many of whom were introverted. They did not feel comfortable being where they were and didn't understand the textbooks or subject area. So with the help of counselors and administration, we changed some schedules and opened an hour in our day where we could focus on Robotics (Lego). We found a program that donated equipment and we began to build autonomous Lego robots during class time and after school. We visited outside computer labs to learn programming because we do not have classroom computers. And a mentor from a community agency volunteered time to help with the cost of tools, supplies and entry fees for competition. By the end of our first year, we had a solid group of three students interested and committed. At the end of the second year, we now have seven students participating, two parents volunteering, and we have moved into the FIRST Robotics League where we compete for scholarship opportunities. This group now sees the doors open for a college opportunity.

Last season we were mentored by an already established FIRST Robotics team. We used their build site, and borrowed their power and hand tools, computers and printers. This season we would like to have our own equipment. We have started receiving donations of hand tools, but we have no place to store and organize them. We need a mobile workbench. Since our team is 98% female, the mobile workbench will make transporting of the equipment easier. These students are being encouraged to take on leadership roles while embracing technology, engineering, and improving on their math and science skills.

This group of young learners has to create a plan together and then carry it out. As obstacles occur, they have to problem solve on the spot. They are a solid group of students that keep rolling through the punches. What better way to make learning fun and inspire more youngsters to join our building community than by donating. Your donation will ensure that my students have the tools to keep building and attract more students to our growing program.
