I teach mathematics to high needs students (60% free/reduced lunch)in our district. My approach is to use student driven experiments to provide context and relevance to their mathematics education.

For many of our students this is their first experience integrating technology, science, and mathematics. The power of collecting data from a student designed experiment and then using that to drive a mathematics lesson is powerful. For example students measured the amount of heat generated by a burning Cheeto with a temperature probe. They then converted that into a graph comparing the weight of the Cheeto to its heat output. The students then calculated a line of best fit through the data, found the slope, and determined the calories per gram of the Cheeto. This was then compared to the calorie estimate on the bag. The discussion and enthusiasm that took place during this experiment was an amazing hook for these students.

In order to facilitate more classroom activities like this I am asking for four TI-83 plus graphing calculators to be donated. This will allow partners of students to collect data, enter it into the calculator, analyze it and make real life inferences from their mathematics.

Your help will allow us to continue raising the bar in mathematics education for students of all abilities and backgrounds. The enthusiasm generated by these activities transfers into class performance and an interest in science and mathematics related professions.
