Electronic Assistant For Teens With Reading Disabilities

Our students with reading disabilities need an electronic reading assistant that can efficiently and unobtrusively scan difficult words or text from course materials, then assist them with pronunciation and definitions.

Some high school students here in our rural Kansas high school struggle with grade level reading content despite many interventions, and an amazing electronic device could assist them with pronunciation, definitions, comprehension and many high school, college, and adult reading tasks.

It must be difficult for students to participate in a high school curriculum who still struggle with reading. Many give up or don't reach their potential - and many have lots of capability that is restricted by their reading disability. Just as vision can be corrected with lenses, there is now available an electronic reading pen that scans text and delivers an audio (pronunciation) and text (definition, syllabification, synonym) output that is efficient and unobtrusive, and would help these students succeed in the high school curriculum, and carry new skills on to college and adult vocations.

This project is a request for one of these amazing reading pens to be used by our students. These students with reading disabilities will receive training to use the pen as an assistant in success in general educational settings and with academic and prevocational materials. Your help will make it possible for students who struggle with reading tasks to access and take advantage of the general high school curriculum, and explore the uses of a modern, marvelous piece of assistive technology.
