Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Can you calculate that? I teach mathematics in a high poverty small school district in southeast NM. We are an extremely rural community comprised of 90% Hispanic. Prior to having a high school, 50% of the students dropped out. Last year, we graduated 98% of the senior class, and 85% went on to study post-secondary.

Due to the high poverty, and low rate of parents with high school diplomas (about 35%), we are in a real need of having two classroom sets of calculators. Our focus is to incorporate into each classroom cross-curricular activities, and real-world applications. We are unable to purchase classroom sets of calculators.

We need two classroom sets (30 each classroom) of scientific calculators. This will give our students opportunities to use the calculators in class, as well as enhance their ACT/SAT scores, and our state standards based assessment scores. Our students haven't had exposure to calculators as many are unable to purchase one, and essentially that at times stalls the learning because much time is spent on simple calculations instead of exploration.

Your assistance in helping us with classroom sets of calculators will change the outcomes of our students. We have made a concerted effort to have our students enroll in dual credit courses, and without simple tools to assist them with coursework, many students are held back in learning. We want to give the students as much background and experiences necessary to be successful post-secondary. Your generosity will certainly assist us.
