Counting My Way Through the BUGS and WORMS

My students need 10 Math Maipulatives such as counting sets and patterning sets.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hi! I teach in a low income school. My students come from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Forty percent of my students are Hispanic, thirty-five percent are Caucasians, fifteen percent are American Indian, and ten percent are African American. My goal as a teacher is for each student to develop math skills.

My students are learning about sorting objects, counting each group and making patterns from objects they have sorted. The more exposed they are to a variety of manipulatives, the better chance they will master the PASS objectives. I have found through many years of teaching that my students feel confident when they can actually manipulate objects they encounter on a daily basis.

Worms, bugs, butterflies, dogs, and cats are great manipulatives to introduce and teach math concepts. Once my students have been exposed to math, they catch on quickly and develop the necessary skills, which helps them gain self-assurance. This confidence scaffolds my students to new levels not only in math, but also in literacy, science, and writing because they transfer the excitement of mastering a skill into other subject areas.

Through your support my students can develop necessary skills of one-to-one correspondence in counting objects and matching groups, sorting and classifying objects, grouping objects into sets and explaining what the objects have in common, analyzing patterns and repeating patterns and develop growing abilities to collect, describe, and record information through a variety of means, including discussion, drawings, charts, and graphs.
