Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in a very high poverty area in a large city. I joined Teach for America 7 years ago with the belief that every child deserves to have the same opportunities to learn and to live and to this day I still believe that.

My students don't come to school with the life experiences necessary to connect to the world of literature. If I've never been to the beach or have never seen a forest, it isn't that easy to imagine one. Many of my students have never traveled farther than a mile or two from their neighborhoods. The most powerful tool in becoming a reader is the connection one makes to the story - can he or she "talk back to the text". But that can be difficult when children have not had many life experiences or any access to books during their 6 years.

One way to close this gap is to use non-fiction books to expose them to all different things. My students LOVE science. They can't get enough of it. Unfortunately, science is not an area that is focused on in our schools. We don't have the materials in our classrooms to expose our kids to the world of science. However, scientific non-fiction books open up their curious minds to places, people, and animals outside of their neighborhood and help them learn about the world around them. My kids LOVE science books. The bigger the books and the pictures the better. I try to stock my classroom library with as many science books as I possibly can from my own money, but these Big Books would allow my whole class to share these experiences through teacher directed lessons together. The storage rack would allow easy access for my students during independent reading - when my kids love to sit and get lost in these larger than life books.

Budget cuts have been taking their toll all across the country. These are resources that my kids need but that I cannot offer them access to. They love science - please help us out. Give my curious first graders a chance to learn about the world around them.
