I teach 8th grade science in a rural, high-need community on the Navajo Nation Reservation.

My school has trouble with reading and math, which means that most of our school funding is allocated to help improve reading and math scores. Unfortunately, this leaves the school science department with inadequate funding. In order that my students enjoy science and gain a thorough understanding of the fundamentals, I try to do as many experiments as possible on a tight budget.

I am hoping to receive 5 hot plates in order that my students can observe phase changes, catalysts, and chemical reactions. By actually watching these processes in action, my students will gain a much better understanding than if they simply read about them in a book.

With your help, my 8th graders will not only read about scientific processes, they will actually perform them. You will be the difference between 8th graders who sit in a desk and listen and 8th graders who get out of their seats and gain first hand experience with the scientific method.
