Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an experienced chef who has become a public school English teacher in a lower income urban public school in New York. My children have learned a great variety of skills, techniques and recipes from me, but they need equipment to be able to learn more. Our school does not have an oven and this is one of our greatest limitations.

Many of our students come from single parent homes, most of them are on free lunch and breakfast programs and their families are on food stamps. Teaching my students these skills as well as the skills of budgeting and different styles of cooking is very exciting for them. Learning how to budget to have real food for the whole month is a new skill for most of them. Our cooking club has been a massive success, mostly funded by my own purchases at yard sales and thrift shops as well as staff donations of cookware. We have been working without an oven so far, but it is very limiting!

Learning the proper temperature, storage techniques, how to use leftovers, and how to stretch what you have to feed your family is a skill that is not taught in traditional schools. Many of our students have lived on packaged goods and haven't learned how to make food from scratch: homemade soups, casserole, baked goods, etc.

You can make an incredible difference here. Our club is one of the most popular ones in the school and my students learn great life skills. Providing us with an oven will make such a difference and provide us with a whole new assortment of foods and techniques to learn.
