I teach 7th and 8th grade students with specific learning disabilities in a rural community in South Mississippi. The majority of the students in the district receive free or reduced lunch, thus it is considered a high poverty-level area.

After the students collect physical data, they have no means of evaluating the impact of healthy foods and exercise have on their physical health. With so many of the students overweight and our school focusing on exercise and healthy food choices, what good does it do if the students cannot see how it impacts their physical health?

I am asking for Texas Instrument (TI) 84 Pluses calculators (3) to analyze and graph data gathered each month from peers in physical education. The project will be converted to PowerPoint and presented at the annual class awards day at the end of the school year. This presentation will help all students see how exercise and healthy food choices can improve their health. The greatest benefit of all is students with disabilities will learn how to use the TI 84 calculators for more advanced math classes.
