Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Kindergarten in a beautifully culturally/racially/linguistically diverse, low-income, high-need public school. I (and another teacher) work with 40 students each day. Almost all my students are English Learners who enjoy hands-on, playful experiences to help them soak up new social studies and science vocabulary and concepts.

Nothing says loving like something from the oven! We do lots of real cooking and baking in our classroom and now my students really want to be able to expand this experience into dramatic play with a pretend kitchen, dishes, and food. Your donation is the missing ingredient in this recipe! We visited a childrens museum/play area that had a pretend kitchen and my students were magnetically drawn into it- boys and girls starting "cooking," talking, and setting the table for a virtual feast! We were able to talk about how important it is to cook, eat healthy foods, and the beauty of sitting down together to use friendly words during the "meal." Playing in the kitchen brought so many concepts and vocabulary to life for my largely English- learning class: family, food, sharing words, and most importantly, COOPERATION!

We would love a play kitchen where boys and girls could learn about the loving and scientific process of preparing a meal and cleaning up. Currently we have flash cards of healthy foods, but not plastic models. We would love pretend food that we can use during dramatic play. Lastly, we need the dishes, cups, and table setting that is rugged enough to withstand many years of Kindergarten kids cooking up a storm!

The environment we create for children tells them how much we love them. Your support shows how much we value building caring and cooperation skills among our young ones. Your donation will help create a beautiful, homey space where they can practice new vocabulary and learn concepts that are so essential: food, family, caring, and sharing.
