The food choices kids make are influenced by so many things! I teach culinary arts to high school students that are so aware of their surroundings and want to share their knowledge. Their lives are so completely different from each other in so many ways including a large percentage that fall into the poverty criteria. Lucky for me they are eager to share their stories about what food means to them and the impact it can have on their lives. It is really rewarding to see a classroom come together over the common bonds of food that is present in every person’s life.

To have students see how food can have an impact on levels of emotion, physical needs, as well as socially, the students need to discover within their own lives what food means to them. Examples of this include the memory sparked because they have smelled a certain type of food or a food that is used to celebrate a special occasion. In order to assist them in examining the foods in their lives, they need to learn how to identify what & how those influences come in to play.

While providing students with background on US culture and influences, it is important that they look beyond their own eating experiences by exploring the world they live in. An extremely powerful way in which to accomplish this is with the use of the book “Hungry Planet, What the World Eats” by Faith D'Aluisio, & Peter Menzel(photographer). It is a way of providing students with a global perspective on what people around the world eat and the conditions that influence these choices.

Your support in purchasing these books will allow my students to gain a world perspective and see beyond the food choices and influences that they now only vaguely understand. What a difference you can help make in a student’s life when you enable them to share their personal experiences with others and open their minds to greater understanding of the world they live in.
