I want my students to take their noses out of outdated textbooks and set their sights on today's world. I teach American Government to 8th graders in an inner-city area of Missouri. While my students have the typical challenges of a high-needs area, they are in a unique position--they have all tested to be intellectually gifted in order to attend my school. They come from a range of racial and socioeconomic backgrounds and are incredibly motivated and inquisitive.

Teaching American Government gives me an opportunity to guide these gifted students towards becoming informed and proactive citizens. Many of them watch the news or talk to their parents at home about national issues, and they come to school filled with questions and ideas about a slew of current topics. Unfortunately, many of my high-needs students do not have exposure to these issues at home and feel embarrassed or unable to participate. If I choose to ignore these topics and follow my outdated textbooks, I lose the opportunity to make my students excited about being active citizens in today's world.

An LCD projector for my classroom would level the playing field for my students. With this technology I could show current news clips, debates, speeches, and more. For example, if we are discussing the role of government in people's lives, I could show my students clips of the current debate surrounding health care and discuss the differences of opinion. They could also use this technology to create power-points and videos to show to the rest of the class. This would give ALL of my students the information they need to be engaged in class, as well as get them excited about politics and current events.

My students truly love learning and should not be sold short because of a lack of resources. You can connect them to the outside world in a way that is impossible otherwise. With your help, my students can get the information they need to change the world as adults.
