I teach in an urban, high poverty, high minority population school district. My students come from very diverse financial background with some having cell phones to many of the ones wearing the same school shirt for weeks. I teach the Freshman class and I have the opportunity to help my students determine what kind of four years of high school they will have. Coming from a middle class background, I could not imagine the everyday hardship that some of my student go through. I still remember one of them giving me a heartfelt hug because I gave him a binder to keep his school work in. A binder....

I teach mathematics and I have found that my students not only lack skills in the subject area, but the majority of them also are unfamiliar with study skills. I have so many eager students who want to do well in school, but do not know how to study.

So, this school year, one of the main focus in my classroom is to teach the students study skills. I need to teach them how to be organized, how to prioritize their projects and how to keep track of their homework and other assignments. We will be working on the book "Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens", the school has purchased enough copies for all incoming Freshmen. However, it is important for the students to connect what they are learning in the book to their everyday life and that's why all teachers in our building will be following the book practices. The requested materials, such as 30 Binders, 300 2-pocket Portfolios, 30 USB Flash Drives and 8 Boxes of Dry-Erase markers will set my students on their way to being successful in high school and beyond.

This is probably not the most glamorous project that I could have had, but it is the one that would give my students life-long skills that they can take and apply anywhere: college, job, personal life. Please help me teach my students how to study and bridge the equity gap in education.
