As a Magnet Elementary School, we teach electives to students like a high school would. One elective we have is "Track." We practice for 2 quarters, 4 days a week, building up to an 8 school track meet held at a local college. There are 21 boys and 21 girls on the team in grades 3-5 of many ethnicities, and many of them live in poverty.

As these students learn to run different races and events, they thrive at sprinting, but struggle to understand proper pacing. We work on both sprint and distance runs, but need help teaching the students how to pace themselves. This knowledge will help us prepare them for middle and high school track as many of them are very talented runners.

Having 7 heart rate monitors would allow us to rotate the monitors around daily, enhancing the students' understanding of what their heart rate has to do with running. We would have charts of target zones, and really focus on these strategies during distance run days.

Many of these students have the chance to use track and field as a way out of the poor communities they live in. Adding a tool that would help them be able to understand their own body and allowing them to help train themselves is the next step in advancing their learning. Your donation will help these budding young athletes truly understand how their heart helps them succeed!
