Old School Still Has a Place

My students need 3 dictionaries and 3 copies each of 6 engaging books to read.

Our Community Day School was reinstated after all the supplies were distributed to other sites.

I am working in a small Community Day School that was reinstated 2 weeks before school started. All the reference materials, reading books, etc. have already been distributed to other school sites within the district. The only thing these students have to work with is a computer based high school program. There are no maps in the room, I am working on getting a whiteboard to stimulate group learning.

I have been working with the students to discover what they are interested in, several enjoy books by S.E. Hinton. I feel that these books are at a reading level and length that the students can read successfully. I also want them to be able to find answers in the old way - opening a book. The Longman dictionaries are very user friendly with definitions that the students can understand.

These reading materials will go a long way in helping these students to engage in academics. Several of my students are not successful in a normal classroom. Helping them to succeed academically will help to create educated adults that can think outside the box. You will be contributing to something that is very needed in our society.
