Podcasting Tools to Support Literacy, Math, and Science

My students need a classroom laptop so we can produce classroom podcasts related to our literacy, math, and science curriculum. We also need a recording system to plug into the laptop so we can record at an appropriate sound quality.

I teach 5th graders in Oregon in a school with a variety of ability levels. With often have children from other countries in our classroom with various needs when it comes to literacy and math instruction. Our school has been focusing on writing for quite some time now, so I am looking for ways to encourage kids to get excited about creating and publishing their own work.

For the last couple of years, I have been doing some podcasting with my classroom, and it has met with great success and enthusiasm amongst our fifth graders, school community, and beyond. I have seen students get excited about publishing poetry, interviewing students and faculty, sharing their multicultural backgrounds via interviews, addressing political issues (as was the case with the last election), and much, much more. It has been frustrating for me, though, because I have had to use a school supplied laptop for recording purposes that is literally falling apart, not maintained by the school district, and very limited in what it can do when it comes to podcast production. It is really impossible to produce from a desktop because mobility is so important when going out into the field and then spending hours at home mixing tracks, splicing in music, etc. As they are faced with limited resources, our district is not providing laptops to teachers anymore, so I am stuck with something that literally won't turn on anymore.

I would really like to request a MacBook and a recording system so I can continue the momentum I started a couple of years ago. A quality laptop could also be used with the other technology I use from time to time in my classroom.

I have witnessed the incredible increase in enthusiasm from my students as they listen to their creative math story problems, poems, interviews, science presentations, etc. being published on the web. Relatives in other states, children in other schools throughout the world, and parents can learn about what we are doing as they listen via live streaming or sync up with their iPods. It is cutting-edge stuff and such a great way of getting kids invested and interested in the learning process.
