Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year I will be teaching 25 wonderful Kindergarten students! I am so excited to finally get to meet them and start them on their academic careers. I need a set of dramatic play costumes, such as a doctor, a nurse and an astronaut for the dramatic play center in my classroom. The ones that I have used in previous years have been tattered, worn out and broken. Constructive \ dramatic play helps children develop social skills while laying an important foundation for reading and math. For example, children who set up a pretend post office or a restaurant in the dramatic play area learn how to take turns, how to speak clearly to one another, and how to make up their own stories — stories that are the foundation for writing. This type of play also helps the shy, timid child who might otherwise have a hard time speaking up in class. If a child is timid, playing in the dress-up area helps him make friends. Isn't making friends what Kindergarten should be about? Play is a major mode for learning in Kindergarten. Play can lead to enormous growth in all aspects of the child’s development—cognitive, social, emotional, imaginative, and physical. Furthermore, it is the primary tool through which children explore their interests, express their joys, and process their fears, disappointments, and sorrows. Now this is a Kindergarten experience I would like to give to my students. Can you help me by giving us the costumes that we need? These costumes will open up new doors of imagination and storytelling. This type of play will lay a wonderful foundation for future learning. It might only seem like a few costumes, but for my students, it will be a wonderful gift that they will remember for the rest of their lives!
