We All Have a Ball in Health Class!

My students need 30 exercise balls.

My students are poor and underserved. Most of them are overweight and at risk for type 2 diabetes. We are a community of 10-12th graders, in a health/biology class that is 95 minutes long each day. 65% of the students do not speak English at home. 54% are served by special education. 78% are on Free Lunch.

We need to incorporate exercise into our class each day. We are in a health class, yet we often sit still for over an hour! We have visited several clubs/gyms, but the cost is prohibitive for most families. Students have PE for one semester only, then nothing for the 10th -12th grade. More than 50% of the students are clinically obese, most of the remainder are overweight. Since most students come from Hispanic, Black or Asian families, they are at very high risk for type 2 diabetes. They want to have an exercise program! They need to be empowered to do it on their own.

If each student had an exercise ball to use, we could eliminate the chairs in the room. We would then have a 10-20 min core strengthening session during the transition from Health to Biology class. During our fitness unit, we would have a personal trainer come and design a workout for this class-time, with an emphasis on how to use the Internet and text/media to enhance the workout at home. Incorporating this for home use during TV/Movie use would be critical. We would use a journaling technique to record data, such as change in measurements and weight, as well as Body Mass Index and Pulse/Blood Pressure.

Your help will empower kids in their formative years to get into shape, use "seat time" to work out, and ultimately build strength and endurance, which will result in fewer medical issues. You will be encouraging healthy habits and getting students to think about personal fitness goals as they lead to health or illness.
