Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach several Integrated Science courses and a physical education (PE) course in tennis. Students range from ninth through twelfth grade. The school is a charter school where 100% of students are eligible for the free lunch program and is primarily Latino. As part of a growing PE curriculum at the school, I am teaching a beginner's tennis class for 15 students in the fall and spring.

The students in my classroom come from a low-income community and have few opportunities to engage in physical activity. Poverty, unemployment, poor access to health care, and an underfunded education system are social forces that negatively impact the community. In addition, the community also suffers from the highest prevalence of diabetes, obesity, and hypertension of any community in the area.

10 over-sized racquets, 1 ball cart, and 2 cases of tennis balls will get the PE tennis program off the ground. As a former varsity tennis player, I will teach them rules, skills, and drills that they can share with their families and friends. The goal is to make physical activity fun, to improve the wellness of our students, and ultimately to combat the growing obesity epidemic in their neighborhood.

Your help will ensure that my students, who have grown up without resources at home and in their schools, will be able to participate in a fun and challenging sport. We hope to develop a community of wellness among students and community members where exercise is another important part of being healthy. You can make this happen!
