Future Film Makers

My students need 4 classroom video cameras to film their final projects in our Film Appreciation class.

You could be helping the next great film director find their vision! I teach Film Appreciation at a large high school in South Carolina. The class consists of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and we study the technical and literary aspects of classic and modern American film. Many of the students sign up for the class for the opportunity to create their own film at the end of the semester. This task is always more difficult than they imagine, as they have to work in groups to brainstorm, storyboard, write, film, edit, and act in the film. We spend the last three weeks of the semester toiling away at this process during fifty minute periods. I have seen some amazing works of art, as well as some disasters.

The biggest problem seems to come when it is time to actually pick up a camera and get to work. My students often struggle with getting their visions on film in just the right way. Conflicting schedules and limited access to technology are often to two major killers of a great movie in progress. Our library has five or six old to new video cameras, but with 3000+ students it is often difficult for all of my groups to get a camera on assigned filming days. When they do get a camera, it is returned to the library of course at the end of the period and available to other classes until we go back the following day. This leads to footage being either erased or taped over and ultimately lost. It is very discouraging to my students, especially those who do multiple takes around school to get the perfect shot.

It would make all the difference to my students if they had access to cameras kept in my room, at all times. This way they could sign them out before or after school or during other classes and know that their footage will be there the next day. In addition to this, they would benefit by having the Flip video camera because they could upload their footage right to a computer in my room via USB port. The pride that my students feel on viewing day is tangible; this project creates and reinforces a passion for creativity and film making in these students that I do not get to experience in my English classes.

Your support will allow my students to attack this project with less stress and more confidence. You will help their creativity come alive and possibly inspire them to pursue a career in film! Please help us bring their visions to the big screen; donate a Flip!
