Jammin' Djembe Drums

My students need a full-size djembe drum.

World Drumming - what a great way to express yourself! I teach K-5 music in a suburban school with a population that is adjusting to life with many different cultures.

As our community grows in number and ethnicity, I am searching for ways to make my students realize we have many commonalities in world music. Drumming gives us a chance to explore music from many cultures - Africa and India, just to name two.

I am requesting one drum at this time, but I plan to gradually add drums until I have a set of 10. This will allow me to rotate students through many different instruments in a drum circle. My picture features an activity we use to play world percussion instruments in a drum circle. Drum circles allow students to create (improvise) their own rhythms in conjunction with a group, so they evaluate their patterns to make sure they are adding to the group, not causing cacophony. Adding djembes will give depth to performing as well. Many different sounds can be produced on djembes as well as incorporating movement and playing with partners. When I have the drum circle set up, as students enter the classroom you can feel the excitement in the air. They love to play instruments and it is an activity where every student is engaged and doing his/her best.

With your help my students will get to experience a variety of different music styles, improvise and create their own music, and will continue to stay involved with music for their lifetime. Their love for music begins at an early age and we need to do everything possible to keep them focused as they grow older.
