Jazzin' It Up

My students need a complete Jazz for Young People curriculum for our jazz unit.

I teach elementary music at a Title 1, high need school in suburban South Carolina. We are in need of materials for a Jazz Unit that will be paired with their Social Studies lessons.

Students have displayed an interest in more modern forms of music. They have been introduced to Jazz in their Social Studies class and our music room is lacking in resource material to supplement their history lessons.

Our textbooks that we have only give resources for a few major Jazz artists. We are in need of in depth curriculum materials on Jazz artists from the entire 20th century. We are also in need of the recordings and video clips that this resource will provide. When we have tried to listen to music clips on-line they often get cut off because the Internet speed fluctuates. Having the Cd's and DVDs in the classroom would ensure that we are using all of our time for instruction rather than waiting for a music clip to load onto a desktop computer!

Many of my students look up to musicians that are not good role models, or to musicians that use inappropriate language for an elementary student to be exposed to. It is my hope that by exposing them to Jazz and to Wynton Marsalis in this curriculum, that they can look up to an African-American musician who exemplifies what kind of person they should be trying to emulate. Funding this request will ensure that my students will be exposed to a well-rounded musical experience. It will help them understand the link between Classical music and the modern music they hear today.
