To Animate or Edit, That Is The Question!

My 7th and 8th grade students need a laptop with 2 GB ram (and a protective sleeve for storage) for editing their photography and animation projects. This is the first request out of four laptop requests.

We're documenting our world and animating our ideas! I am a K-8 visual arts teacher at a small Title I city public school in a high-need community, with 90% of our students in the free lunch program. We serve a primarily immigrant population in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood; our students come from all walks of life. We have a fully functioning visual and musical arts program, and a number of our graduating student visual artists have been accepted into specialized art high schools. My junior high students study design and applied arts, the current 8th grade being the first group to study all 3 years of design with me, animation being their final unit of study.

Our school is a tiny school with limited numbers of resources shared amongst a large pool of teachers and students. My art program has not been able to fully complete the state mandated technology standards because we have not had access to fully functioning computers - often, the shared laptop cart is returned with chargers missing, or laptops uncharged, students are not able to store their materials on the laptops, and there are scheduling conflicts. As a result the students have been unable to edit their photography work and, as we are almost ready to begin photographing our stop-motion animation projects, we will need regular, dependable resources in order to edit our photographs and feed them into the animation program. Our goal is to have our first school film festival in the spring.

We need a laptop that is solely dedicated to the visual arts program, that allows students to store their work and access it regularly, which will not suffer large amounts of use and abuse at the hands of many. We need a total of 2 GB of RAM memory so that our programs will run quickly and smoothly, and a laptop sleeve to protect the laptop while it is not being used.

With this donation, you will empower 60 students to edit photographs and create stop-motion animated movies - and countless numbers of 8th graders in the following years. The opportunity to do this work opens their eyes to yet another potential career, and strengthens their technology skills and knowledge.
