My students need 27 book title and book sets including "Thief of Always" and the Sardine in Outer Space series for their independent reading library.

I am a seventh grade English teacher in a high-need community. The vast majority of my students are struggling readers. I have found that the males in my class often are further behind than my female students. My students are mostly Hispanic or African American.

My students, on average, are more than two years behind grade level with their reading. Many studies have shown that the only way for them to catch up is to learn at least 3,000 new words per year. For the most part, my young ladies enjoy reading, but the boys do not. Studies have shown that boys are more inclined to read comic books, graphic novels, escapism, and humor than girls tend to do. Unfortunately, I am provided with very little to none of these types of books.

Using the American Library Association as my guide, I've picked books that are geared towards reluctant readers and have themes that young males will be drawn to. I am trying to create an environment where the students take the lead for learning. I feel that if they are offered books that are more appealing, they will read more.

One proven way to get young men to read is to buy books that will hook them and entice them to read more. Your donation will make it possible for young men to develop a love for reading. Help them overcome this obstacle.
