Digital Cameras Expand Our World

My students need 5 digital cameras and 5 memory cards to record their experiences on field trips and for other projects.

I am a third and fourth grade teacher at a small public elementary school in New York State. I teach all academic subjects to an extremely diverse group of students, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, native language, and special education needs. All of my kids are motivated and love learning, and I want to give them every opportunity to deepen their understanding and their analytical thinking.

My class is undertaking a yearlong study of immigration to the United States, especially our home of New York, from 1600 to the present. On our first field trip, we went to another neighborhood to search for evidence that immigrants lived there. With disposable cameras (paid for by me), the kids photographed store signs, food in markets, campaign posters in different languages, and a great variety of other evidence of immigration. After I developed (and paid for) the photos, the kids made posters showing what they had seen. Through this process, they came up with deep and thoughtful questions to pursue. The process of taking the photographs caused the students to look more closely while on the trip, and the process of examining the printed photos caused them to think more deeply about what they had seen. As the year goes on, we'll be taking lots of field trips to immigrant neighborhoods, historic sites like Ellis Island, and museums like El Museo del Barrio. I cannot afford to buy and develop the film from disposable cameras for each trip. Having digital cameras will make it possible for us to get the most out of every field trip and expand our social studies learning.

With the use of 5 digital cameras, I can divide my students into groups that will work together to notice and photograph important sights on our field trips. With kids this age (8-10), the first-hand experiences they have on field trips consistently have the greatest impact on their learning. Cameras will allow us to further expand the observations, thinking, and questioning that happen on these trips, leading them toward greater knowledge and understanding. We will also have the chance to use the photos with computers to make PowerPoint presentations, and otherwise develop their understanding of technology.

Your generous donation will help my students look, think, and understand at broader and deeper levels. Our study of immigration will be immeasurably enhanced by the experience of photographing and looking at photos. Your gift will make a lasting difference to my students' learning. And you will impact future classes just as much, as I will continue to use the cameras in the coming years.
