Hi, my class consists of 5th and 6th grade special needs students with varying cognitive abilities and behavioral needs. We have become a unique group ready to take on the challenge of higher level thinking skills! I have found through many years working with special needs students that they want to be a part of the "regular" school community. We parallel the main content curriculum to cover the teaching standards and provide higher level skills. They truly enjoy science and the hands-on activities along with becoming cooperative workers in and out of school.

Science is where it's at! Science is everywhere and the students love it! We currently do what we can with the limited classroom supplies that we have. I beg, borrow, and recycle. I am so proud of my students. They have learned to think like scientists, act like scientists, and work cooperatively with others both in and out of the classroom. They are making connections with the outside world and we want to continue to soak it all in!

New and additional materials and supplies would greatly improve the learning environment. The connections we are making with the other content areas continue to grow. Working with improved supplies and more of them would give more opportunities to the ever-growing numbers of students in my classroom. My students love hands on activities. Supplies for my class will be utilized each day to help students become active learners. Such materials as beakers, graduated cylinders, test tubes, mineral study kits, general class supplies: colored pencils,pencils, construction paper, glue, lined notes to tag important information, will all initiate the learning and cooperation needed to be successful in life. The majority of students in my class are from low income families and do not have school supplies that are necessary for school, nor does our school district have the budget to upgrade or grant new equipment and materials. Test scores are low. Any additional resources such as test preparation materials, resource books, and games to help the students remember information are beneficial!

We are excited about the opportunity to get supplies and equipment for our classroom! When I discussed with the students a possible donation could be coming our way, they were so excited they started making a "class" list of what they would like to learn more about! The students that are a part of my program comprise a mix of cognitive, language, social, and behavioral difficulties. One or more of these obstacles in learning can keep them from being successful in a regular learning environment. With new and additional materials we can work together on those skills (problem solving, cooperation, connections, survival, reflective writing...) that can help them get there! We truly appreciate your consideration to our request and look forward to hearing from you and informing you of our progress. Thank you!
