Remember the author from your childhood that allowed you to realize the wonder of reading? We are a 5th grade class in a high-needs, Title 1 school where the great majority of learners speak English as their second language.

Through Reader's Workshop, Read-Aloud, and interactive Shared Reading, we have embraced the joy of literacy, and have recognized the importance of finding and exploring our favorite writers during our Author Study unit. This unit allows children to find, and embrace, the novelists that turn the art of reading from a task to a passion.

Three authors have consistently been the most popular with my 5th grade students: Jerry Spinelli, Louis Sachar, and Roald Dahl. These authors each provide a different range of fiction that can reach all students. Spinelli is known for the heart and message of his stories; Sachar for his humor; and Dahl for his fantastical elements. With your help our favorite authors will have a prominent position in our classroom library, and in our lives.

You can make it possible for my students to remember 5th grade as the year they became lifelong readers. We all remember the author who helped us understand that reading was not a task, but a wonderful journey. Help my students find that special writer during our Author Study unit, and start their journey.
