It's hard to do your best work when you don't have basic school supplies! I am a fourth grade teacher teaching in an urban district whose students are economically disadvantaged. They should not be punished for this.

In my classroom we do a lot of projects that require basic school supplies that many families are unable to provide for their children. I provide what school supplies I can for my students, but how empowering would it be for each child to have their very own crayon box with their own supplies? Just imagine the pride they would feel to pull out their own supplies to work on their projects instead of asking a classmate, "Can I borrow your crayons?" Not only would it give my students a sense of pride, but also some control and responsibility.

First and foremost, pencils, pencils, pencils. We need them everyday! Whether we are writing an essay in language arts or defining vocabulary words for science or sketching a poster about the causes of the American Revolution in social studies. We need a pencil. I always say, "Pencil first!" Now it is time to add the color. Colored pencils, markers, and crayons will allow my students to add color and depth to the projects they are working on. These supplies will make their presentations come alive, pop off the page.

It overwhelms me to know that my students don't have the materials they need to support their education. I have equally strong feelings of the possibility that they will because of the generous donations of people who care about children. You will make it possible for my students to reach their educational potential, feel pride in their work, and give them an opportunity to exhibit responsibility. My students, their families, and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generous contribution to the future of tomorrow. Thank you!
