Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Please, can you just read one more chapter?" This is the question that I hear from my second graders on a daily basis. For the last fifteen years I have taught at an inner city elementary school, where 85% of our student population is comprised of English Language Learners. We are fortunate enough to be in a community where many parents give of their limited time and support but the economic resources are simply not available.

My students are definitely and without a doubt very bright. They are constantly asking questions that go above and beyond our curriculum. My second graders thrive on learning material that involves discussing everything from the Swine Flu to World War II. They love reading books about the bombing of Hiroshima to the "scary" Goosebumps series. In fact, my students would much rather read a book than have playtime. I have children that are having difficulty reading, pick up a Goosebumps chapter book and push themselves to read; all on their own. Now that's motivation! The best part is listening in on their conversations when they naturally come together on the rug to discuss what happened in that chapter.

I would very much like to supply my students with as many chapter books from the Goosebumps series as I possibly can. These books will not only spark the imagination of my capable readers, but it will encourage my struggling readers to push themselves further.
