I teach at a high-needs middle school in New York. My school has made great strides in the three years of my tenure there. When I arrived, the principal had recently taken over mid-year after his predecessor had been forced out. Behavior was unruly, teacher morale was low, and there was simply not a whole lot of learning going on. After a sustained effort by parents, administrators, and families, we have begun to right the ship. This year, I have been blessed with a group of 25 happy, inquisitive, and eager-to please fifth graders. Thanks to the changes in our school, I have been able to push them much farther academically than any of my previous classes.

One of the more successful aspects of the initiative to improve our school has been to integrate technology into the classroom. We now have access to laptop carts and projectors, and we recently gained Internet access in all classes. The improvements have greatly increased engagement in my classroom. Whether we were creating PowerPoint presentations on the three branches of government, conducting research on famous Civil Rights leaders for Black History Month, or typing the final drafts of our persuasive essays, my class has benefited immeasurably. Having access to these technologies will prevent my students from being at a disadvantage in what will undoubtedly be a competitive job market for years to come.

There has been one missing component in our emphasis on technology, and that is sound. Though we can watch videos and view content online using projectors, my personal computer has very poor speakers. Only the three or four students sitting nearest the computer can actually hear the sound that accompanies the clips I want to show. As a result, I have been limited to showing content that has subtitles or does not have any sound at all. I have found a variety of great sites, such as funbrain, edheads, and teachertube, which provide quality educational videos. I’m sure my students would love them—both high functioning students looking for enrichment and struggling students seeking engagement would be able to find appropriate content. All we need are headphones to bring the sounds to the entire room. If each student had a pair of inexpensive headphones available, they could find content that was appropriate for their research and access it without disturbing others around them. Additionally, I included a request for a set of computer speakers so that I can play multimedia clips that would benefit the whole class. Thanks for your time and consideration of my proposal!
