I work in the heart of an under-served urban school district, yet when I walk to work each day I know I am in for a smile. I teach science to fourth and fifth graders at a charter school. With an extended day and a hard working staff, the whole community believes this school can give students the education they truly deserve. Paper is an incredibly valuable resource in schools. Students and teachers use packs of paper each day. Yet the impact on the environment is a serious problem, and as the schools face budget cuts, the constant need for paper is digging into our school's pockets, forcing teachers to abandon projects and activities. Our school prides itself on being environmentally friendly through initiatives like a garden project, a plant-based nutrition program, and other projects. Paper is our Achilles heel. 30% recycled paper is a great way to show students how we can care for our environment through our actions, not just words. These 40 reams of paper will allow teachers to give students the materials they need without the ecological impact and set a precedent for how schools can still be environmentally conscious even in tough financial times. Your support and generosity means that our school can continue our work to remain environmentally friendly without cutting a project or an enrichment activity to give students the supplies they need. We must make sure that our actions speak as loudly as our words. With your help, this paper can help the students know we are committed to the planet and their learning.
