Romeo and Juliet in Modern Day English

My students need 50 copies of "No Fear Shakespeare:Romeo and Juliet."

I teach 9th and 10th grade English at a school with a high poverty rate. My school is also "a school in need of academic improvement in New York State." And with the recent proposed budget cuts to educational funding, we are in desperate need of money for supplies and resources. We are required to read Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" in the 9th grade curriculum. The play is an exciting and exhilarating play that the kids will love. They love opportunities to get up out of their seats, move around, and act. The problem is that we have 100 copies of the play for about 200 students to share. And the copies that we do have are old, mismatched, and falling apart. I would like to get new copies of the play for my students to be able to read in class and take home at night. Since Shakespearean language is so difficult they need the time at home to be able to re-read and analyze it. Also because the language is so intense, I want to provide them with the "No Fear Shakespeare" version. This version has the Shakespearean language on the right side of the text and modern day English translation on the left. They can read the play as it was originally written and consult the translation to confirm their understanding. These kids need the additional support that the translation provides. Do you remember what it was like to read Shakespeare in high school? It was like reading a foreign language! Now, imagine you are a Spanish speaker who is struggling to learn English and you have to read Shakespeare. That is what I am going to ask a lot of my kids to do. I remember reading this play in high school and hating it because I couldn't understand what was going on. I re-read it in college with the translation and I "got it." It is one of my all time favorites. Please help me to pass that love of this play on to my kids. I know that if they "get it," they will love it, too. Your generosity will empower my kids and help them understand Shakespeare's words. This is a skill that they are going to need later in high school and in college. Shakespeare is a "dead white guy", but his words can live on and carry with them a multicultural message of love and acceptance!
