Very Hungry Kindergarteners!

My students need 33 colorful, high-interest, Eric Carle books to feed their hunger for engaging stories in our special needs Kindergarten classroom!

My Students

"There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." (Albert Einstein) I see little miracles in my classroom every day!

I teach children with special needs in a Kindergarten Special Day class in a Title I school.

My students' qualifying conditions range from Mild/Severe Mental Retardation to Speech/Language Disorders. My students love to listen to stories read aloud, but I am finding that they especially love the books I am able to check out at the library or resource lab by Eric Carle. They are intently engaged by the catchy, repetitive text and colorful art as well as the interesting subject matter for young children: insects, bugs, and animals!

My Project

I've chosen Eric Carle's books because he creates books that are not only engaging but easy to read - even for children with special needs - especially after repeated readings by the teacher at circle time. They love these readings because the stories remain interesting, with illustrations that are vivid and vocabulary that inspires curiosity and even participation (think of The Very Hungry Caterpillar's rumbling stomach before he eats and then his upset stomach, or imagine the Grouchy Ladybug's fist shaking as she repeatedly asks for a fight)! I love that I can incorporate so many concepts in one book study, such as days of the week, counting, comparing quantities, and life cycles, to name a few from The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

My special needs students need classroom books that are rich in visuals and vocabulary and are fun to listen to and read!

With your help, my students can be inspired by the world of fiction. Their vocabulary would increase through their exposure to Eric Carle's award-winning texts, and their desire to create art in unique ways would be stimulated as well. I speak for both myself and my students when I say that we would go 'buggy' if you would consider donating to our project!
