Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"All night long, I thought about that phrase: 'To die a martyr is to inject blood into the veins of society.' Niloufar was a real martyr, and her blood certainly did not feed our society's veins..." These are poignant lines from Marjane Satrapi's memoir, Persepolis. Persepolis is a graphic novel that tells the unique story of the author’s coming of age during the Islamic Revolution. This novel is the opening text that my students read at the start of the year and it truly hooks ninth graders of all reading levels through its unique, graphic novel format. I am a ninth grade English teacher at an inner city high school where I serve economically disadvantaged students. About 90% of the students in my school participate in free lunch programs and the number of English language learners is 10% higher than the state average.

The economic, familial, and personal obstacles my students face is shocking. Yet, many are able to go onto college despite their adverse circumstances. It is important to understand that many of my students come from homes that lack bookshelves full of engaging texts. My classroom is therefore one of the few places where they can get lost in a novel that moves them to think critically about universal themes regarding human nature and society. Unfortunately due to the current economic situation, our school lacks the funding to provide any books for the English department. As an English teacher, this is a huge obstacle, as students cannot develop their literacy skills without reading novels.

As a social justice educator, my goal is to ensure that my students develop not only textbook knowledge, but worldly knowledge. Persepolis is that text that will help my students learn about a culture and setting that is unfamiliar to them. Hence, the novel provides a unique opportunity for students to perform Webquests (online-based research projects), which expose them to Iranian culture and political situations, which are still relevant today. The students will not only analyze the text through a historical lens, but a personal one as well because they can connect their own coming of age experiences to the conflicts and joys expressed by the author through her memoir.

By funding this project, you will make it possible for my students to have exposure to an amazing piece of literature that is challenging, yet extremely engaging to my ninth graders through the graphic novel format. You will also ensure that my students will develop their researching skills, which is an important and necessary standard for college. You will be paving the road for college-bound, college-ready scholars one book at a time!
